5. History of Da Nang International Airport

5.1 French colonial period

Realizing favorable terrain: flat sandy soil, convenient access to southern and northern airports, the French colonial government built Tourane airport in the 1940s as a civilian airport.

During World War II, when the Japanese occupied Indochina, the Air Force of the Imperial Japanese Army used this place as an air base.

After World War II, the facility was used by French forces during the Indochina War (1945–1954).

5.2 Viet Nam's war (1955-1975)

In 1955, the newly established Republic of Vietnam Air Force (VNAF) inherited from France a symbolic force of 58 aircraft. Tourane Airport is converted to civilian use.

In 1957, the Air Force of the Republic of Vietnam re-established a presence at Tourane airport (now renamed Da Nang airport). The Army of South Vietnam (ARVN) used Da Nang as a training base.

Air Vietnam used this facility from 1951-1975 for domestic and international civil flights in Southeast Asia.

During the Vietnam War (1959–1975), the facility was known as Da Nang Air Base and was a major United States military base. Once little more than a provincial airport, the facility has since been expanded to 2,350 acres (950 ha) with two 10,000-foot (3,048 m) paved runways with a concrete landing pad. The taxiway and helipad are parallel.
